My name is Kayleigh Percival, I am a 19-year-old female student from Eastbourne, East Sussex. I have just finished studying A Levels in Maths, Art and BTEC Production Arts at Sussex Downs College in Eastbourne. I have been fortunate enough to have been selected for a year’s voluntary work placement in South Africa representing Project trust.
Project trust is the oldest educational gap year charity specialising in long term voluntary work placements for school leavers. They have been pioneering year-long placements in Africa, Asia, and the Americas for young people aged 17-19 since 1967.
In September 2017 I will embark on the amazing opportunity and adventure to teach deprived primary school children in South Africa. I am expected to create and run extracurricular activities at the school such as arts and crafts and music clubs as well as the day to day classes and activities.
For me to participate in this once in a life time opportunity and provide these children with the education all children deserve, I have to fundraise £6200. This will cover my training, debriefing, plane ticket, living expenses, accommodation, insurance, overseas support, operating expenses as well as operating costs and overheads for the Charity itself. So far I have raised £5800+.
The year in South Africa will benefit the children I will be teaching as it will give them a chance to have a reliable teacher who is just as enthusiastic to teach as they are to learn. I will also gain confidence in myself and a lot of leadership skills which I will need if I pursue becoming a qualified teacher in the UK.
